Were you dreaming of feasting at a table in Tuscany this summer...and are shifting your daydreams a little closer to home? Looking for ways to get outside, be active, and connect to the good things? Perhaps you'd like to grow your own (amazing) groceries, and just need some inspiration, guidance and structure to get you on your way. Our growing season has begun at the Sandown Centre and we can't wait to welcome you onto the land with your very own instructional garden plot.
Come experience the joy of learning to grow food with your community! This course will be instructed by amalgamate farmer-chef Jenn Cline on the new Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture in North Saanich. Be prepared to get your hands dirty throughout the course as you learn how to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest vegetables and herbs from your very own garden plot throughout the growing season. Along the way you will learn everything from planning your crops, preparing healthy soil, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, irrigation, and much more!
And of course, be prepared to have a summer of gourmet-eating, as you bring home a bounty from your garden.
We offer a unique experience with this course: you will be on site with a group of emerging 'Farmpreneurs' experiencing their first season on their own leased plots, as well as the established Fickle Fig Farm. We will gather every second week starting late-March, through summer and into September.
Please know that health and safety are of utmost importance to us. This course will be out-of-doors at ample physical distance. We will follow COVID precautions and guidelines to ensure the safety of all our participants.
This course is adult-focussed; if you would like to grow food with your children, please see our family-focused course offered on Saturdays! All adult ages and abilities are very welcome; please talk to us if you have any concerns about mobility or ability.
meet your wonderful instructor...
Jenn Cline joins the Sandown Centre on the heels of six seasons of farming and eight years of professional cooking experience. Her educational background is food centric: a culinary arts certificate, farm school certificate, and a BA in International Development with a focus on Food Systems and Community Development. She has worked with a number of for- and non-profit organizations including Growing Chefs!, The Sharing Farm, and A Rocha Canada, with roles spanning sous chef, volunteer coordinator, and assistant farm manager. Jenn co-founded and ran Riverside Farm for two seasons in Richmond, BC, and was Co-Director of a food canning cooperative in Vancouver that missioned to reduce local food waste by using "ugly" food to produce high quality value added products. She is excited to join the team at Sandown and continue the work of cultivating community through the act of growing food, teaching workshops, all the while taking care of the earth through regenerative growing practices.
Jenn loves nothing better than to work with food growers of all experience levels, helping them to feel comfortable, confident and connected in the garden.
The season-long course will cover topics such as :
garden bed preparation
garden planning: crop planning, crop successions, crop rotations
getting to know the plant families
planting: techniques, timing
companion planting, spacing, seeding (DS vs TP)
getting to know your soil: soil types of soil, improving soil structure
from garden to kitchen: harvesting & preparing your bounty
the Whys of seasonal eating for a healthy local food system.
Course cost is $500 for the 2021 season, meets every other Thursday eve 6:30-8pm. Class begins April 1 (postponed
one week) to give the spring weather a chance to warm up!!
includes instruction & inspiration, your 4' x 12' plot, irrigation, seeds, access to tools, and connection to a gardening community. The course will also include a shared "berry bushes & perennials" bed to gain skills in growing these crops. And of course, the bounty you take home is included in the price!

For those of you interested in signing up for a plot within a community garden, we are working towards this goal! The idea is that people register in the Grow Your Own Feast! course with Jenn Cline, gaining the skills and community connections to then establish a longer-term community garden area for the 2022 growing season. Let's make this happen!
