Cold storage is essential for the longevity of your product and gives flexibility with the timing of your harvests, allowing farmers to grow more produce. Can’t wait to see them get filled next spring!

The Sandown Farm is slowly wrapping up its first year. The farm has been covered cropped, mulched (thank you Hi Lo farms for the hay!), and overwintered crops are ready for winter. Our produce went to Flourish School Food Society, Kelset, Deep Cove, South Island Farm Hub (you can still find our produce here!), Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank, and at the Sandown co-op style farmers markets. In doing so, we also trained four young farmers who ran the farm over summer and engaged hundreds of volunteers.

Many big changes will be announced soon. Thank you for your interest in supporting our mission to empower farmers, restore land, and secure our food future. We hope to continue doing this important work for years to come.

Today we honor the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the generations of Indigenous Peoples who continue to carry the weight of truths that Canada has long ignored or silenced.

As a nonprofit working within food systems, we recognize that our work exists on land that was stolen, not ceded. The food systems we navigate and often attempt to “fix” are built on centuries of displacement, erasure, and the deliberate dismantling of Indigenous ways of knowing, growing, and sustaining life.

The truth is:
We benefit from systems that were designed to exclude Indigenous communities. We have not always centered Indigenous voices in conversations about food justice, land stewardship, and sustainability. And we know that reconciliation is not a checkbox, it is a continuous, uncomfortable, and necessary commitment to truth, humility, and transformation. Learn about soil nutrient management as a vital aspect of soil health, for both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. This is the first year we have a designated 1-acre farm space to use for this programming. It’s great to expand beyond the teaching garden for more hands-on learning activities in regenerative agriculture. Last week, we had 60 Grade 9 students from @oakbayhighschool harvesting and pruning tomatoes, weeding, and harvesting sunflower seeds. 🌻

We are sad to say goodbye for now to our wonderful team of youth employees, now that summer is ending. Teale, Raven, Fynn, and Brigitte have carried Sandown through summer with so much energy and enthusiasm learning to farm and being a part of the North Saanich community. 1. We activate previously unused land 🐑

Sandown Farm progress report! Our program coordinator, Teale, has been very busy the last two weeks while I’ve been away and before the farm hands get started. The farm is looking great, with a couple beds of kale and collards and the rest in zucchini and cherry tomatoes. Soon we will plant carrots, parsnips, another generation of kale and collards, and more - all for school food! The back half acre has been cover cropped but came up spotty, so we’ll sow again in time for the weekend’s forecast rain. Last photo shows some of the junk that’s been uncovered from the site, much has already been hauled off. We’ve also found some fun intact glass bottles and horse shoes! Here’s a little snippet of some of the things uncovered when plowing the new Sandown farm site! Some sections of the soil are quite nice, others have rubble, and some areas have infill of gravel and sand. Swipe to see an aerial photo of the site from 2019. I can only imagine the condition of the soil further North where the grand stand and jockey buildings were! Unlike our incubator farm program for new and young farmers starting their own farm businesses, the Sandown farm will be operated by the non-profit as a site for education and to provide produce for school meal programs. After plowing, discing, and tilling to open up the soil for removing rubble and breaking up the hard pan, we move to a no-till system. We are very excited to get started on this new project.
